Supélec has a very special position among the leading engineering institutes. It is the reference in its field - electric energy and information sciences Internationally, with classes of 440 engineers graduating each year, Supelec is on a par with the best departments of electrical and computer engineering of the top American or European universities.


Supélec has a threefold mission : degree courses, research & development, continuing education. The organization of the Institute enables the teams focusing in specific fields within the three sectors of activity to work together in close synergy. Highly sophisticated equipment is made avalaible to them.

Training and instruction for degree courses allow students to reach a high scientific and technical level while developing their general cultural background. Supélec has traditionally sought to strike a fair balance between abstract concepts and their concrete applications. Laboratory work, projects and internships all provide the students with a sense of reality and a taste for the concrete. Students' conceptive abilities, analytical, and communicative skills are developed to enable them to acquire the methodology needed to master complex systems and to adapt to the corporate environment. Creativity, initiative, discernment, a sense of responsibility are the major characteristics of the Supélec spirit. Active participation in associations is thus strongly encouraged.

An essential feature of research at Supélec, whether fundamental or applied, is that it is based on the actual needs encountered in industry. It is carried out in close cooperation with industrial partners, in particular through research contracts, by the departments of education and research and by the research laboratories associated with Supélec. The close links between research and teaching make it possible to incorporate the latest scientific and tecnological advances into the student lectures, tutorials and practicals. Research thus guarantees top quality education. Continuing education, on the other hand, allows engineers engaged in professional activities to adapt to new techniques or to increase their overall competence. The programs offered have been drawn up with and for industry. The involvement of faculty members and research personnel in these programs ensures real technology transfer between the Institute and its industrial partners.


Engineering students are selected according to a single criterion - the quality of the applicants. Admission is gained either through the highly selective Centrale-Supélec national competitive examination, or through a specific selection procedure for graduate engineers or holders of a French or foreign university master's degree. The diversity in its recruitment system has always been one of the Institute's greatest assets since its foundation a century ago. During their three year course of study, engineering students will acquire the very distinctive Supélec "culture". It is characterized by a taste for learning and entrepreneurship, a concern for method, and a capacity for adaption and action. Their common culture will give them access to any professional field, in positions of the highest responsibility.

On leaving the Institute, Supélec graduates can indeed choose from among a variety of careers in research and industry. Their broad and general training as engineers with a high level of competence in the scientific, technical, technological, economic, organizational and strategic aspects of their profession, will allow them to work as systems engineers managing complex projects based on high technology, or as expert engineers working for the advancement of specific areas of technology.


Supélec was established over a century ago in Paris. A first extension was created in Rennes, Brittany, in 1972. In 1975 its headquarters were relocated on the Gif-sur-Yvette campus, fifteen miles south of Paris, and a further extension was built in Metz, Lorraine, in 1985. Ever since, Supélec has functioned as a three-campus, single Engineering Institution. Daily contact is maintained through the national network for education and research, RENATER and through the Internet. Thus the three-campus organization is used as a model and a learning tool for team work via the new information technologies.

Each campus is located in an environment of high-level technology. Metz 2000 and Rennes Atalante ars situated in the heart of the industrial parks of Ile-de-Science, where research centers, universities and high-tech businesses are grouped.

Supélec also has an active international policy which has led to cooperative agreements with universities located mostly in Europe, Northern America and Japan.


Since its creation in 1894, to meet the needs of the new industries that were emerging from electricity, Supélec has become a real enterprise employing 1,500 people (staff, faculty and research personnel, engineering students) who adapt permanently to technological and economic advances in order to produce high quality research, training and education. To achieve this, Supélec relies on a strong policy of partnerships on regional, national and international levels, both in the fields of industry and research, and with institutions of higher education. A sense of professionalism, open-mindedness, enthusiasm, a team spirit, intellectual rigor, all in a friendly and communicative atmosphere, characterize the quality of the relations that Supélec engineering students, faculty members and research personnel wish to develop with their partners.


Supélec celebrated its hundredth anniversary in December 1994. During the 1994-1995 academic year a great deal of collective thought was given to the history, the sociology, the prospects of electricity as a vector for energy and information, and to its overall influence on the global economy. A highlight of the centennial celebrations was the open house day on all three campuses, and the colloquium on Energy and Information held at la Villette.
